The NDMS
student body is certainly off to a
terrific start in the demonstration of
their charitable capabilities!
Currently there are THREE charity
projects in motion – Penny War, Can the
Principal, and Breast Cancer Awareness
Dress-Down Day. I believe that is a
record!
In the
realm of the Penny War, the 5th
grade took off like a rocket with
both homerooms well
into their second jar by the second day
of the drive. It is interesting to
observe them as they plot and plan their
strategies to minimize the effects of
the sabotaging efforts of the other
homerooms. 8A obtained 2-jar status on
Friday; while 7B practically filled
their jar in one fell-swoop! At the
other end of the spectrum, 7A ended the
9-day campaign with a grand total of
$6.19 in their jar. This amounts to
approximately $0.025 cents per member of
the homeroom (or 1.38% of the total of
$1,156.85). Perhaps we still have some
work to do in encouraging participation
in charity.
The “Can
the Principal” food staple drive was
announced via the Communication Folder
on 10/9. The morning of Friday, 10/10
saw the arrival of the first several
items which were promptly stacked in the
corner of my office with the promise of
more to follow. The cafeteria staff
also joined in the cause with the
collection of boxes in anticipation of
transporting the results to the food
pantry. Things proceeded slowly when it
came to this project. Even after
extending the closing date twice, the
student body left me more than ample
ability to move freely about the
office. On Monday, October 20th,
we were able to box-up six boxes of
canned and dry goods. I am sure Saint
Matthew’s will appreciate the
contribution.
The
halls were abuzz as the students
planned how they were going to
incorporate pink and white into
their outfits for their first
Dress-Down Day. The total proceeds
of $285.05 will be matched by the
Student Council. As a result,
$570.10 will be forwarded to the
Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer
Awareness Foundation. Maybe the
Student Council can be persuaded to
make it an even $600.
I
certainly am proud of the manner in
which our students have stepped up
to the plate in their efforts to
assist those less fortunate than
themselves! Let’s hope that they
can continue to build on this
successful start as the year
progresses.
